Baptist Health Foundation Receives $2 Million Gift from BMI Insurance to Roll Out Digital Smart TV and Engagement System at Baptist Health

Baptist Health Foundation announced that BMI, an international insurance company based in Miami, has made a $2 million donation in support of Baptist Health’s Digital Patient Smart TV and Engagement system. The donation will launch the implementation of high-tech, patient-centered features in hospital rooms throughout Baptist Health. In honor of the contribution, the registration area in the lobby of Baptist Health Baptist Hospital will be named BMI Registration, with plans for an unveiling in early 2023.

“We are tremendously grateful to BMI for their generous donation,” said Alex Villoch, CEO of Baptist Health Foundation. “The Sierra family have always been dedicated to the Foundation’s mission, and their support will help Baptist Health provide a truly exceptional in-patient experience at our 12 hospitals from Palm Beach to the Keys. This gift allows us to deliver on our philanthropic goal of creating a revolution in patient care to meet the demands of the future.”

Baptist Health began its Digital Patient Smart TV and Engagement system pilot in December 2021 at its flagship Baptist Hospital in Miami. The state-of-the-art technology provides patients with a more personalized approach to care, along with increased comfort and peace of mind.  It also helps streamline and automate clinical processes and communication.

Baptist Health’s digital smart rooms offer hospital patients an array of benefits:

  • Digital entertainment: movies on demand, HD cable channels
  • On-demand meal ordering and guest meal ordering
  • Digital communication board – care team information, daily plan details, patient vitals
  • Auto-assigned Care Education videos
  • Meds to Beds – patients receive prescriptions directly at their bedside
  • Video chat with family and friends
  • Photo sharing with family and friends
  • Translation services – access to 40+ languages including American Sign Language

Other digital enhancements, including customized meal ordering and automated discharge summaries, will be available in the future.

“This incredible donation will make a huge difference for patients throughout Baptist Health,” said Patricia Rosello, chief patient experience officer at Baptist Health. “Digital smart TV and engagement systems represent the future of in-patient hospital care, with greater options for on-demand entertainment and amenities, and the ability to stay connected with loved ones. It will improve patient safety and make it easier for our clinical staff to provide the highest level of care.”

BMI has been a longtime partner of Baptist Health, working with Baptist Health International to further its initiatives to increase access for patients throughout the Caribbean and Latin America. “We are very proud of our partnership with BMI,” said Rogelio E. Ribas, M.D., Corporate Vice President for Baptist Health International. “This philanthropic donation to our Digital Smart TV and engagement system will enhance the outstanding care we provide and offer yet another reason for international patients to choose Baptist Health for their care.”

The company’s leaders are strong advocates for the application of digital technologies to assist in improving the client experience. They believe the donation is an opportunity to support the roll-out of this “high-tech, high-touch” technology across Baptist Health, making a significant impact on the patient experience for years to come.

“We are so grateful and excited to be part of this initiative,” said Anthony Sierra, President and Executive Director at BMI. “This contribution is going to change the lives of many patients because this new technology provides a more personalized approach to healthcare. Additionally, we are delighted to begin this extraordinary partnership with this incredible organization.”
