UC Davis Health Leading Generative AI Collaborative

Generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) is gaining prominence in healthcare, and UC Davis Health, along with other University of California health systems, is spearheading a member-led collective to advance the use of Gen AI in the industry. The collective, called VALID AI (Vision, Alignment, Learning, Implementation, and Dissemination of Validated Generative AI in Healthcare), comprises over 30 founding partners from health systems, health plans, nonprofit associations, and technology and research organizations in the US and internationally.

VALID AI aims to explore the applications, challenges, and best practices of Gen AI in healthcare and research, with a focus on accelerating implementation and real-world evidence. Less than 10% of healthcare organizations currently have concrete plans for executing Gen AI, and VALID AI hopes to bridge this gap.

By fostering open innovation and collaboration, health care organizations of all sizes have the opportunity to leverage the potential of Gen AI responsibly. UC Davis Health’s CIO and Chief Digital Health Officer, Ashish Atreja, highlights the potential for co-creating the science of Gen AI with diverse partners, which can fundamentally transform the delivery of care and research in the future.

VALID AI will bring together diverse perspectives, expertise, and insights to push the boundaries of implementing AI technology in healthcare while ensuring responsible and ethical development. Dennis Chornenky, Chief AI Advisor at UC Davis Health and the CEO of Domelabs AI, emphasizes the need for guardrails to guarantee the safety and efficacy of Gen AI in healthcare. VALID AI will accelerate adoption by validating use-cases and establishing best practices for AI governance and innovation.

The VALID AI program revolves around five core values: Vision, Alignment, Learning, Implementation, and Dissemination. The collective will create a cohesive strategy and shared vision for Gen AI in healthcare, help member organizations align with evolving standards, aggregate cutting-edge research, and establish a collaborative AI sandbox for implementation and validation. The knowledge and advancements generated by VALID AI will be disseminated globally through various channels.

UC experts across the health system are excited to be catalysts for this collaborative effort, which will drive groundbreaking and ethical applications of Gen AI. The initiative will be discussed at the Future & Health Summit, where Chornenky will facilitate a panel with VALID AI founding partners.
