Taichung Veterans General Hospital Earns 2024 Davies Award for Using AI to Improve Care, Safety and Reduce Pain

Taichung Veterans General Hospital (TCVGH), has been recognized as a 2024 HIMSS Davies Award recipient. TCVGH is only the third hospital in Asia and the second in Taiwan to be recognized with the Davies Award since the Award’s inception in 1994.

Based Taichung, Taiwan, TCVGH submitted evidence-based case studies demonstrating applications of artificial intelligence to improve care outcomes for patients struggling with ankylosing spondylitis (AS), a chronic autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in the joints and ligaments of the spine.

Patients saw significant improvements in their pain and reduced chronic kidney disease risk resulting from taking fewer nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for pain management.

TCVGH also leveraged artificial intelligence to improve patient safety in their acute care space. AI models are utilized to closely monitor patients with diabetes and delivers treat to target automated orders for dietary and medicinal interventions.

As result, TCVGH saw a significant reduction in hyperglycemic and hypoglycemic events. In addition, artificial intelligence applications are being utilized to significantly reduce the incidences of acute kidney injury (AKI) and mortality rates associated with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
