JCI Accreditation Standards for Hospitals and Academic Medical Centers, 8th Edition Field Review

Joint Commission International (JCI) has begun development of the 8th edition of the JCI Accreditation Standards for Hospitals and Academic Medical Centers (AMC), scheduled for publication 1 July 2024, with an effective date of 1 January 2025.

As part of standards development, we are seeking input on the proposed new standards during the field review period. The field review is a critical component of JCI standards development that allows for JCI-accredited organizations, patient and patient advocates, subject matter experts, and selected stakeholders to provide recommendations on how new and proposed accreditation standards impact patient safety and quality. The field review is open from October 23 – November 13, 2023.

The JCI Accreditation Standards for Hospitals and AMC, 8th Edition includes new chapters on Global Health Impact (GHI) that addresses environmental sustainability and Healthcare Technology (HCT), as well as new requirements that address workplace violence, cybersecurity, telehealth, and risks of diagnostic error.

In reviewing documents for field review, please note the following:

• The field review focuses on newly added or significantly revised requirements. To identify the difference:
  • Standards, measurable elements, intents, and guidance that are new or have undergone significant changes that have impacted the intent of the requirement are in red font.
  • Standards, measurable elements, intents, and guidance that are in black font may have undergone changes, but the intents remained the same.
• Each field review link asks for demographic information for assessment of how different participants responded to the proposed requirements.
• To facilitate a more focused review of the variety of topics covered in the standards, the field review is presented as 10 separate documents below. Each link will take you to the respective chapter that includes the survey link to the field review questionnaires. Please select each chapter(s) for review based on your interest and expertise .
