The False Promise of Efficiency
Burnout in healthcare isn’t new. But the EHR era, combined with staffing shortages, regulatory overload, and a pandemic hangover, has pushed it to crisis levels.
Enter automation. In theory, it should help:

Clinicians need to know why the system made a decision. Black-box automation invites skepticism. Explainable AI isn’t just ethical—it’s practical.
4. Fail-Safe Design
Automation should degrade gracefully. When an AI fails to populate a field, the fallback workflow must be intuitive and fast. If clinicians dread automation failing, they’ll resist it even when it works.
5. Clinician-Centric Metrics
Vendors and IT teams often measure automation success in throughput or clicks saved. But the real metric should be perceived cognitive load reduction. Did this tool make the day feel lighter?
Reframing the Role of Automation
The future of automation in healthcare shouldn’t be about doing more with less. It should be about doing less, better.
That means:
